Every Country Has Its Own Convenience Food
A recent discussion on Reddit’s r/Cooking raised an interesting question: “Does your culture have something like Jiffy Cornbread?” The author wanted to know what kinds of foods or kitchen staples people around the world regularly buy premade, even though they could make them from scratch. From baking mixes to familiar convenience foods shared by users from different countries, the discussion is about more than convenience. It also raises an interesting question: How can industrially produced foods become a taste of home?
If we bring the same question to Asia, some of the answers may feel very familiar. In Japan, curry roux blocks save home cooks from having to measure and blend multiple spices from scratch. In Taiwan, people might think of instant noodles, frozen dumplings, or frozen scallion pancakes. These foods do not mean “no cooking is required.” Instead, part of the preparation has already been done for us, making home cooking easier and more accessible.
In fact, this kind of convenience has been around for a long time. According to JIFFY’s official history, Chelsea Milling Company introduced a prepared baking mix in 1930 that allowed consumers to make biscuits simply by adding milk. Japan’s S&B Foods also records that its founder successfully produced domestically made curry powder in 1923, helping lay the foundation for the development of Japan’s modern curry culture.
But convenience has not made everyone’s dining table the same. Some people always add an egg to instant noodles, while others have a favorite dipping sauce for dumplings. Even the same box of curry can taste different depending on the meat, vegetables, and cooking method used. Convenience is only the starting point; what remains in the end are personal habits and memories.

In some ways, this is similar to the “consistency” that commercial kitchens strive for. When the same dishes are prepared repeatedly every day, recipes are important, but so is the equipment’s ability to deliver stable heat output and precise temperature control. Gas control components and temperature control systems may be hidden inside the equipment, but they play an important role in making heating performance repeatable from one cooking cycle to the next. The gas valves, thermostats, and related control products developed by Alpha Brass Controls Inc. are also part of the systems that help commercial cooking equipment operate consistently and reliably.
From baking mixes and curry roux blocks to frozen foods, “convenience” does not necessarily make food feel less personal. When a product has been part of family meals for many years, it can gradually become more than just a packaged food—it can become part of a shared memory.
So, if someone asked you, “What is your native county's version of Jiffy Cornbread?” what would be the first thing that comes to mind?
